Why Cybersecurity Matters
Lecturer: Maryam Davari
Thursday, January 14, 2021
2 pm-3:15 pm

Video recording can be found here.
Workshop content: We will review some real attacks, fundamental concepts in security, popular access control models applied in current software systems (such as Role-Based Access Control, Context-Based Access Control, Context-Aware Access Control, etc), and how access policies for a Web service are specified and eventually managed. Plus, research is making a crucial contribution to understanding how to improve cybersecurity; however, researchers face severe challenges in obtaining the data they need to understand threats that are briefly discussed in this workshop.

Video recording can be found here.
Workshop content: We will narrow the cybersecurity awareness gap by helping participants build core knowledge about software security. We will discuss software vulnerabilities and attacks that exploit them.  Mitigating those attacks is vital for any software system. We shed light on the defenses that prevent or defeat cyberattacks and highlight society and governments’ role for more resilient systems. We will explore the effect of vulnerabilities on commonly used systems and devices like banking systems and modern cars.

We will discover what hacking really is and what happens when a company is compromised because of it.
Starting from the art of hacking itself, we will investigate the different hats (black/white/gray), what it means to do it ethically, and how we can use it for counter-terrorism. Then, we will explore what is cyber-forensics, which involves investigating when and how hacks occur, the tools available to an investigator, and how Artificial Intelligence has become a key player in hopes of winning the arms-race. Finally, we will discuss Incidence Response (IR) to adversarial events: how to prepare for and recover from a storm
